The recent report from the Rathenau Institute, entitled ‘Seeds for a Societal Debate’, is now available (in Dutch).
Scientists in the HipGametes consortium are investigating whether it is possible to make eggs and sperm cells from other body cells, such as skin cells. With this in vitro sex cell development (IVG), they want to gain knowledge about, among other things, genetic disorders and infertility. This offers opportunities for the development of new medical treatments. It could also potentially lead to a radically new way of developing human life in the future.
But do we actually want this as a society? Should certain limits and rules be imposed on this research, and if so, which ones? This report provides tools for a broad, social dialogue about research into germ cells from the lab.
